Imagine living two lives at the same time ... in different time periods, and imagine that you know there will come a day when you have to make a choice between your two lives. This is the life Elizabeth (Libby) Conant/Wells is living. She is a time-crosser -- she was born into two different families at the same time, one in pre-Revolutionary war Williamsburg, Virginia, and one in the early 1900's, New York. When she falls asleep in one time period, she wakes up in the other -- no time passes while she is in her other life. The novel begins in 1774 and 1914 respectively, when Libby is 19.
In her 1774 life, Libby and her mother are the first female printers in Williamsburg, VA and the Revolutionary war is coming soon. Libby already knows this is the life she wants to keep and knows she must be careful not to do anything that would change history. She also knows she has only 13 months left to endure her life in 1914.
In her 1914 life she is the daughter of a rich businessman, and her mother -- "Mother Wells" -- wants desperately to be accepted into high society, so is determined to marry Elizabeth off to someone with a title to help raise her status in society. Libby does not want to marry or do anything that would force her continue with her life in the 1900s, but when Mother Wells is success in marrying Elizabeth off to an English Marquess, Libby is hopeful she will still be able to choose the life she wants to choose when the time comes.
I really enjoyed this novel and loved watching as the characters realized that God had everything under control for them to have their best lives! This is not Gabrielle Meyer's first book, but it is her first book published by a major publisher, and I hope it will not be her last!
